Intro to Game Design-Scratch

Course Description

Age:  7-9 

Schedule:Mondays, Nov 9th, 16, 23, 30, 4:30-5:30pm

Learn how to design and develop video games with award-winning games developer Johanna Janiszewski! Johanna loves to make games and loves to teach game development basics. Beginner or advanced, she got you covered with live workshops, digital sessions or her book “Unity for Dummies”. 

After completing the 4 sessions, students will be able to:

  • confidently navigate the Scratch interface
  • understand the core principles of game design & coding
  • create a small video game in Scratch

Course Agenda

Do you love video games? Ever played with Mario, Sonic, or Pac-Man? Come join other aspiring game designers to create your very own small video game! Young designers will use Scratch, an interface that can program interactive games, stories, and sound animations. Young designers will hone creative thinking and reasoning skills as they learn the basics of coding, storytelling, and world building. 

  1. Intro to Scratch, intro to Maze project: Understand what Scratch is, how the project is constructed
  2. Assemble Project Assets: Know how to navigate in Scratch and create their own assets
  3. Code: Know what coding is and understand the concept of coding. Knows where to find coding blocks and how to combine them into functioning coding
  4. Testing & Feedback: Understands that any games needs testing, knows how to give proactive feedback, understand how to handle feedbacks provided by peers

Johanna Janiszewski is a game designer based in Berlin. She loves to teach game development basics to both beginners and advanced learners alike through live workshops, digital sessions, and her book Unity For Dummies. She currently also works with her own game production company, Tiny Crocodile Studios.
